Scandinavian Holiday:  Summer 1999

If we were to designate a theme for this trip, it would have to be "The Sea."  We spent five nights aboard ships and many hours otherwise on ferries, catamarans, tour boats, and fjord steamers.  We visited six great port cities (Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallin, and St. Petersburg), and many of the museums we visited emphasized the traditions of the sea.  Rarely were we more than a mile from the water except for our train voyages between cities.  Our greatest disappointment of the trip was once again the heat.  Scandinavian buildings are rarely air conditioned because it's only needed about three weeks a year; those were the three weeks we were there!
